We all know that crime in general is a problem and many of us may at least know of someone who has been personally affected by vehicle crime. This could be anything from the theft of a vehicle, carjacking or the theft of goods from the vehicle.

In the year 2007-08, the UK Home Office statistics indicate the 1.5 million vehicle related thefts took place. However, perhaps reassuringly the Home Office also believes that having security products on your car, particularly an immobiliser, makes your vehicle more than ten times more secure than one without such equipment.

Vehicle locking equipment, in light of the statistics, is perhaps more of an urgency for commercial vehicles. Vans and lorries, for example, often carry valuable tools and merchandise. This could make a commercial vehicle an attractive target for potential thieves. But how do we go about making commercial vehicles and drivers safer in relation to crime? While we cannot prevent vehicle crime altogether, certain measures could certainly lower the chances of it happening.

In the first instance, they should ensure that all of the vehicles are fitted with high quality vehicle locking and security systems. This is imperative. But in addition to that they should be educating their drivers. They should be making them fully aware of the dangers, making them aware o any known crime hotspots on their routes and also telling them the safest places to stop on their allocated journey routes.

Vehicle crime is an ongoing problem and while the Government is certainly doing its bit to cut crime, individuals must also take responsibility for their own vehicles and exercise caution when it comes to vehicle security.
